The above photos taken in December of 2006.  He is 2 1/2 yrs old in these pictures.

Well, let me first explain how this whole crazy Zebra idea started...
When I was younger, I was a complete horse-nut!  (Still am...)  I was hooked on anything and everything associated with horses.  Well, zebras were like horses, and I thought they were great too.  I always wanted a Zebra, but figured that was impossible.  Then, one day at a nice horse sale in Texas, I saw a Zony (zebra x pony cross).  It was a cute little thing with a red coat and dark brown stripes.  I didn't buy her, but was fascinated with her.  I later got the idea that I wanted to have a half Zebra half Horse that had spots and stripes on the same animal.  Just to have one... just because it would be neat.  I figured I could cross an Appaloosa with a Zebra to make one!  Just a theory...

Then, I started looking into the idea of doing some Zebra cross breeding since I have the ability to manage mares, and receive shipped semen here for insemination.  However, I found that there were very few sources for Zebra breeding, or Zebra semen.  At $2500 dose for semen, with no live foal guarantees... I decided I didn't want to go that route.  Then, I looked into getting a Zebra of my own.  I found some young halter broke and socialized ones, but they were priced at $15,000.00 for babies and some were even higher!  Some of the ones I found were "Bottle Babies" and I didn't want one of them, due to the fact they are cute as babies, but grow up to be Monsters with no respect for people, and they usually become very dangerous.  The grown ones I found were usually Completely Wild or Bottle Babies gone bad!

I had just about given up on the idea, when I got a call from a friend.  She had just seen a Zebra at a ranch a couple hours from my hours from my house.  Well, I went to see him, and...  I bought him.  He is a pretty calm zebra, although he is not halter broke or trained.  I've now got him eating out of my hand, and now able to pet his face.   I plan to do some zebra cross breeding when he gets older.  He was foaled in July of 2004.  In the wild, they don't breed until they are around 5 years old, and they have to fight a grown male to get a female.

If you have any information about Zebras, Zebra breeding, crossbreds, training, etc. I would love to hear from you.  I am very new to zebras and I'm still learning....

Pictures for your amusement...

These are Zebra x Horse crosses known as Zorses.
They can be trained to ride, pull a cart, whatever.  Training a Zorse is apparently similar to training a Mule.

This little Zorse was originally in Italy, and was relocated to a Zoo in Germany.
It's name is Eclyse, and was a year old in this picture.

Here is another young Zorse.
This photo was forwarded to me from someone and I don't have any info on this little guy... but it sure is cute.

Here is another photo that was sent to me over the email... I don't know where it came from but decided to add it to this page for everyone's enjoyment.  This is a Pony / Zebra cross foal.

Here are more Zorse pictures.

This is a 5 mo. old Zorse foal I saw for sale on an ad.  Cute huh!

These pictures were forwarded to me from a Zorse Enthusiast.

These next pictures are examples of  Zebra x Donkey crosses known as ZeDonks or Zonkeys.

These two pictures were forwarded to me by Kelly Crawford.
These three ZeDonks were trained to pull a wagon.

They can be trained to ride, pull carts, or just be pets.

Striping varies with each individual.  Some of these were taken with winter coats, and the stripes are less visible that time of year.

If you have any Zorse, ZeDonk, or Zony pictures   I'd sure love to see them, and add them to my site to share with everyone.
