We have a large breeding program and raise several foals each year. At any one time during the year, I may have several foals, a few broodmares, prospects, or a stallion or two for sale. Selling directly to individuals through advertising, referrals, word of mouth, and repeat buyers have all been part of sales in the past. I prefer these sales over sales at auctions. In the past, I have occasionally consigned a few horses to Catalog Sales. I do NOT prefer to sell at auctions, as I'm not sure who is bidding on my horse, and if that buyer is the right fit for the horse and vise versa. Over the last few years, and several more Birthdays.... I have made the tough decision to drastically reduce our breeding program. This is easier said than done... I love my horses, and each one has a special part in our program. Several have been raised here, and sired by our special stallions, of which many aren't here anymore. Others are out of special mares that held a special role in our program. Others were added for their great qualities, pedigrees, and features. However, now that I have decided to reduce my herd... I have to make decisions of who to keep, and who to sell. I have LOTS of certain bloodlines in my program, so part of my decision will be based on trying to keep a little of each bloodline, but I can't keep them all. (Especially, when many are closely related) Other decisions will be based on sentimental value. Some are the last fillies or colts I raised from certain special horses from years gone by, and I want to try to keep some of them. Many of my horses are related to each other, and I will have to carefully plan who I can cross with who, so that will also effect my decisions on what I can keep. My income comes entirely from horse sales and stud fees. So the decision to reduce my numbers comes with added stress. Can I find them all good homes? Can I keep my program going with a smaller herd? Can I supplement my income with something else? Should I start another side business? Will I have the funds to start another business? Will the current drought effect my ability to save money for another business? All tough questions and I have no certain answers... Meanwhile, I need to reduce my horse numbers, and individual sales are very time consuming and TIME is something I don't have enough of.... So, I have made the tough decision to Consign several horses to Catalog Horse Sales ...OR.... On-Line Auctions... in the very near future. I can't do all of them at once, so I will try to pick a small group to prepare for each sale, and do the reduction in stages. I will list the horses being consigned, and the information about each Sale so anyone interested in those horses may either GO TO the Sale to bid, Bid by PHONE during the sale, or Bid by INTERNET/ON-LINE if that is also offered.
